Islam in America

This course offers a broad introduction to the history of Muslim communities in the United States, from the first African Muslims brought to these shores in chains as early as the 1500s to the diverse ethnic and racial communities of post-9/11 America. Through a chronological and thematic approach, the class examines the origins, transformations, disappearances, and rediscoveries of American Muslim life within their religious, social, and political contexts.

Weekly sessions explore enslaved African Muslims and Moriscos, the reemergence of Islam in Blackamerica, the rise and legacy of the Nation of Islam, immigrant Muslim communities during eras of exclusion and expansion, and contemporary Muslim life in New York City. The course concludes with a Muslim Harlem walking tour and a community potluck with project presentations.
